JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND
ECOCIDE STUDIES (JEJES)
Journal Policy
The Journal of Environmental Justice and Ecocide Studies (JEJES) is dedicated to
advancing scholarship that critically examines and addresses issues of unlawful or
wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of
severe, widespread, or long-term damage to the environment caused by those acts.
This is consistent with ongoing global efforts to criminalise ecocide and form the
bedrock of our editorial focus.
This policy outlines the foundational principles governing our commitment to
ethical publication practices and the dissemination of world-class research.
1. Aims and Scope
The Journal of Environmental Justice and Ecocide Studies (JEJES) is a
distinguished peer-reviewed academic journal that fosters critical scholarship, legal
discourse, and policy analysis. While acknowledging the broad spectrum of
environmental injustices, this Journal uniquely prioritises and seeks
submissions that rigorously analyse and are primarily focused on ecocide.
The Journal welcomes original, high-quality research that explores, but is not limited
to:
- The legal, ethical, social, economic, and political dimensions of ecocide.
- Theoretical and practical frameworks for defining, preventing, prosecuting, and
remediating ecocide. - Historical and contemporary case studies of acts constituting ecocide, and their
impacts on communities and ecosystems. - The concept of ecocide and ongoing efforts to define it legally and add it to the
Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. - The role of international law, national legislation, and customary law in
addressing ecocide. - Mechanisms for accountability, reparations, and restorative justice for victims of
ecocide. - The inter-linkages between ecocide, human rights, indigenous rights, and
climate justice. - The responsibilities of states, corporations, and individuals in preventing
environmental destruction on a scale that constitutes ecocide. - Comparative analyses of legal and policy responses to unlawful and wanton
acts committed with the knowledge that severe and widespread or long-term
environmental damage is likely.
2. Editorial Policy and Peer Review Process
All submissions to the Journal undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process.
The editors initially screen submissions for relevance, quality, and adherence to this
policy, and they subsequently review them by at least two independent expert
reviewers. The review process is meticulously designed to ensure the publication of
high-quality, original, and impactful scholarship. Editorial decisions are based on the
recommendations of the reviewers and the editorial team, with a commitment to
providing timely feedback to authors.
3. Submission Guidelines
Authors are invited to submit original scholarly work that has not been previously
published nor is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All
submissions must be written in clear, concise English (British spelling and grammar
preferred) and conform to academic expression standards.
The Journal seeks original scholarly contributions that critically analyse the current
state and future evolution of law and policy addressing profound environmental
harms, particularly ecocide. Submissions should meticulously detail the prevailing
legal frameworks (comprising relevant legislation, international conventions, and
judicial authorities) and robustly explore complex, ‘grey areas’ where the law is
unsettled or nascent. Authors are strongly encouraged to present well-reasoned
arguments, proposing legal innovations, and offering expert opinions on the
trajectory of accountability for widespread or long-term environmental destruction.
3.1 Detailed Formatting and Citation Guidelines:
Submissions should generally not exceed 10,000 words (including footnotes), or
approximately thirty (30) pages, and must be submitted in Microsoft Word format.
For longer manuscripts, prior consultation with the editorial office is required.
i. Authors should adopt 1.5 line spacing between lines of the main text.
ii. All submissions must be in Times New Roman font, size 12.
iii. References are to be provided in footnotes (Times New Roman, font size 10) and
must strictly adhere to the OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal
Authorities) referencing style, latest edition or the Nigerian Association of Law
Teachers (NALT) Uniform Citation Guideline available at www.naltng.org (or https://sabilaw.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/NALT-Guidebook-as-printed-in-2022-1.pdf ).
iv. The submission titles should be centred and in Title Case.
v. Author(s) names should follow below the title, centred. A separate, concise author biography (not exceeding one hundred and fifty (150) words per author) must be submitted; this profile does not count towards the page/word limit.
vi. The manuscript should be structured using a clear hierarchical numbering system
(e.g., Arabic numerals for main sections, followed by decimals or letters for
subsections):
1. Main Section Title
1.1. Subsection Title
1.1.1. Sub-sub section Title
(a) Sub-sub-sub section
(b) Sub-sub-sub section
